With all the available tools on the internet, it doesn't make any sense not to do the research on the subject. I learned more about the fracking process while contributing to the "Oil Run" feature film script, and even more about the Chicago underworld. Research is one of the many keys to rounding out a fictional world, because the truth is often more entertaining, and unbelievable than fiction. - Writing Process
I like to know where I'm going, even if I don't know how to get there, When writing a mystery, I find I should know who, how and why, before the main character leads himself into the red herrings. Once the outline is done, I follow where the characters lead, and let the story present itself to me; I discover things I didn't know going into it, and make notes for revisions later. Finishing the rough draft is the first goal, with the spit & polish coming after.
